Status, mandates and territory

Our status

Since it was created on January 1, 1996, the AMT applied its expertise to plan, operate and promote public transit in Greater Montréal. To fulfill this mandate, the AMT has been granted the status of a regional government agency and reports to the Quebec Minister of Transportation.

Our mandates

Commitment, innovation, leadership and responsibility: these values dictate our actions daily as we carry out the following mandates:

  • Plan, coordinate, integrate and promote public transport services in close cooperation with our partners
  • Operate the commuter rail network and the metropolitan bus network
  • Take an active part in improving the efficiency of transit lines with a metropolitan vocation
  • Plan and build any eventual extensions to the metro system
  • Participate in funding the operation of services provided by 14 transport authorities in the region
  • Support, develop, coordinate and promote special transportation services for persons with disabilities
  • Provide our partners with expertise and tools that address their many needs in terms of financing and managing commuter considerations


Our territory

Our territory encompasses 83 municipalities and the Kahnawake Mohawk Reserve. It extends from as far north as Saint-Jérôme all the way south to Saint-Jean-Baptiste, and from Hudson in the west to Contrecœur in the east.

  • This territory reflects the Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) defined in 1996 and also comprises the territory defined by the automobile drivers' public transport contribution fund, which has been in place since 1992.
  • The AMT's territorial limits are scheduled to change somewhat to reflect the impact of socio-demographic changes on commuter arteries in the region and in response to upcoming decisions in public transit matters.
  • Any addition or withdrawal of a municipality would require an amendment of the Act respecting the AMT.
